Determining the Lens for shooting Portrait Photography by Chi Pritchard
Portrait photography is one of the most challenging areas of photography to shoot. Finding the right lens for the shoot is probably the single most important aspect of your shoot. What steps do you take to find the perfect lens for your portrait photography.
There are many types of lens out there to choose from. You will be limited in most cases by the type of camera you have. You obviously won’t be able to use a Canon lens with a Nikon camera. So, you first need to make sure you actually know the type of camera you own. No brainer I know, but if you get the wrong lens you won’t be able to use it.
Portrait photography can be a prosperous field if you really enjoy it. It’s just as challenging as shooting a wedding. So, you’ll find some photographers choose to get into portrait photography over shooting weddings. You don’t have to deal with an up happy groom having his picture taken. You may have the child who won’t smile, but that’s about as bad as it gets in portrait photography.
There are many types of portraits that will help you narrow down the type of lens you need. For family photography you’ll need a good aperture of f/2.8 or wider. The best way to look at it is smaller the number determines the wider the aperture you have. Using a wide aperture helps you get a depth of field this compact and brings the focus strictly on your subjects. Your client will appreciate the shot much better than having a shot that the focus is on the background of the shot. Using a narrow field of depth also brings attention to your client. It puts everything in your shot except the client out of focus. This is probably your best method for having the focus on the client.
The fuzziness or blur of the background, is very important when shooting. If you aren’t able to achieve this you’ll need to place your client further away. Put as much distance between the client and background. The out of focus background can happen if the spacing and background don’t work.
The higher end lens have an aperture around the f/1.3 range. This also will include a fast shutter which can help you catch a smile or expression that you wouldn’t get with other lens. A shallow depth of field is the quality a good lens will have.
Another important area to look for when choosing a lens is focal length. The two types of lens are zoom and prime. The more expensive lens are going to be prime. Length is important when picking a lens you don’t want to go shorter than 40mm. The shorter you go the closer you’ll have to get to your subject. Which will make your subject feel uncomfortable and boxed in. You want to be at a good range and a focal length of about 65 to 140mm on your lens. Your shots will look out of wack and make objects look distorted and out of proportion in most cases. A child with an arm that looks twice as large as the other isn’t going to cut it.
Your going to find that most photographers on the amateur side will go for a zoom lens. One it’s the least expensive and probably the best one to start with. It gives you a chance to work on getting your technique as well as helping you to become more familiar with your equipment.
The best part is that you can use any lens that’s out there on the market as a portrait lens. It really depends on the quality you want in the end and how much you are willing to spend.
